France striker Benzema, who won the 2022 Ballon d’Or early this year, has been ruled out of the
World Cup because of a thigh injury suffered in training. French Head coach Didier Deschamps added “I am extremely sad for Karim, who made this World
Cup a major goal.”
“In my life I never give up but tonight I have to think about the team like I always do,” Benzema said.
“So the reason tells me to leave my place to someone who can help our team to make a great World
Cup.”
The French Federation stated Benzema underwent a MRI scan on his left thigh and its was confirmed
he will need a recovery period of three-weeks.
France are already without midfielders Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, defender Presnel Kimpembe and
forward Christopher Nkunku.
France play Australia in their opening match later tonight.
